Compile markdown into typeset books.
You already write in markdown. Turn your organized folders into polished PDFs and reflowable EPUBs in one command. No pandoc incantations or LaTeX toolchains required.
npm i -g @uniweb/unipressNeeds Node 22.12 or newer.

unipress handles the typography, the layout and the output formats, so you can stay in your text.
Markdown native
Keep your writing in plain, numbered files: 01-intro.md, 02-chapter.md. The number sets the order. There is no proprietary format and nothing to lock you in.
One source, many formats
Compile the same folder into a print-ready PDF, a reflowable EPUB and browser-paginated HTML. Structured records can become an Excel workbook or a Word report.
Typography without configuration
Typeset with Typst under the hood. Each template carries its own trim size, margins and front matter, so a book reads like a book.
How unipress compares
There are many good tools for this. Here is where unipress fits.
vs. Pandoc
Pandoc is the standard for converting between markup formats, but it is a low-level tool. Making a book with it takes long command lines, custom LaTeX templates and glue scripts.
unipress compiles rather than converts. A template already knows your folder's order, the typography and the output formats.
vs. Quarto
Quarto is excellent for scientific publishing and data science. It runs Python or R code inside your documents.
unipress is built for book conventions: trim sizes, gutter margins, a print interior without its cover, and structured records woven into prose.
vs. LaTeX and InDesign
LaTeX sets beautiful pages, with a steep learning curve. InDesign is powerful, but it is manual and paid, and it leaves the plain-text workflow behind.
unipress typesets PDFs through Typst and builds EPUBs from the same folder, without you writing a line of typesetting code.
Need a website for your book?
unipress is built on Uniweb, an open-source framework for content-driven websites, with a visual app for the people who write them. Once your manuscript is ready, give it a home on the web.
